“Оrleu – Kozybayev University” Project: A Dialogue on the Quality of Assessment in Education

The university hosted a guest lecture titled “What Really Influences Students’ Academic Achievement (in the Context of John Hattie’s Global Research).” The event was held within the framework of the “Оrleu – Kozybayev University” project and aimed at strengthening partnership ties with the Institute of Professional Development of the North Kazakhstan Region, a branch of JSC “National Center for Advanced Training Оrleu.”

The keynote speaker was Leila Almagambetova, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor, Director of the Institute of Professional Development for the North Kazakhstan Region, and a graduate of our university.

The lecture was organized as part of the course “Contextualization of Educational Reforms” for second-year students enrolled in joint teacher education programs with the University of Arizona.

The purpose of the guest lecture was to present and discuss, from the perspective of pedagogical practice, one of the most complex issues in the education system—assessment, which, alongside teaching and learning, is a key focus of educational reforms. The discussion was based on materials and findings from global research by John Hattie, an education researcher and professor at the University of Melbourne.

Students were not passive listeners during the lecture. Based on their analytical engagement with the material, they worked on designing personal insights related to the application of assessment resources and tools. As a result of the event, the authors of the best questions on the topic, demonstrating critical thinking, received the monograph “Scientific and Methodological Foundations for the Formation of Competencies of Continuous Professional Development in Conditions of Academic Autonomy of a University” by Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences A. Murzalinova.
